Don't panic, but don't ignore it

A defect notice from Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy means an inspector found something on your side of the connection point that needs repair. It comes with a timeframe. If the work isn't done, the network can disconnect your supply.

Step by step

  1. Read what's ticked. Notices list the location (service wire, private powerlines, private pole, pillar or point of attachment) and the defect, plus any extra details written by the inspector.
  2. Note the deadline. Notices typically ask you to confirm you'll fix it within a set number of days, and complete the work within a longer period.
  3. Send it to a Level 2 electrician. A photo of the notice and the defect is usually enough for a quote.
  4. Get the repair done. The work has to meet the NSW Service and Installation Rules.
  5. Make sure the network is notified. We submit the completion notification so the notice is closed off.

Common defects

  • Rusted or damaged meter box or switchboard housing
  • Rotten, leaning or termite-damaged private poles
  • Low or damaged private overhead lines
  • Corroded points of attachment and brackets
  • Trees too close to private lines

Contact the network using the details on the notice. Extensions are at their discretion, so it's best to book the repair early.

I'm a tenant. What should I do?
