The connection point

Everything on the network side of the connection point belongs to the distributor: street poles, mains, transformers and usually the service fuse. Everything on your side is private: private poles, private overhead lines and pillars, the point of attachment on your house, consumer mains, the meter box and your switchboard.

Where the connection point usually is

  • Overhead supply: commonly where the service line attaches to your house or to your first private pole.
  • Underground supply: commonly at the network pit or pillar near your boundary.

Exact rules are set out in the NSW Service and Installation Rules and your network's guidelines.

Why it matters

If something on your side fails, it's your responsibility to repair it, and the network can issue a defect notice if it's unsafe. Work on the service side of your meter has to be done by an accredited Level 2 electrician.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns the service line from the street to my house?

It depends on your network and arrangement, but repair work on it is done by an accredited Level 2 electrician. If it's damaged, call us and we'll sort out who's responsible.

Who pays to fix a private power pole?

The property owner. See private power poles.

Is the meter mine?

Meters are usually owned by your retailer's metering provider, but the meter box and board they sit on are yours.
